RETURN TO THE FULL CALENDAR
Samplers of extremely high caliber exist today that were made by young girls in various orphanages in Amsterdam as well as other cities in the Netherlands. The earliest ones that we know of that were made there are from the mid 1700's. These wonderful textiles were part of a young girl's education and the average age was from 10-12 years old. Needlework and knitting as well as household duties were skills they had to learn in order to be self-sufficient upon leaving.
Margriet Hogue of The Essamplaire will guide us through the history of the orphanages, income, duties of governors and governesses and staff, the samplers, and the girls making them.
